Environmental Mural Partnership – Detroit, MI

As part of a community-engaged art course, I worked with the Sierra Club of Detroit and local activists to highlight environmental justice issues through public murals. conducted field visits to industrial sites in areas like the 48217 zip code—known as Michigan’s most polluted—where we observed environmental hazards such as chemical leaks and improperly stored waste. These visits were coordinated with local activists, including Theresa Landrum, and supported by organizations like the Sierra Club of Detroit.

We utilized tools like Google Maps to identify potential mural sites and reached out to property owners to secure permissions. Over two months, we developed mural concepts that reflected the environmental challenges faced by these communities. The project emphasized community engagement, ensuring that the artwork represented the voices and experiences of local residents. This initiative was part of a broader collaboration with the Great Lakes Office of the National Wildlife Federation and the Detroit Walls program, aiming to address environmental issues through public art.

Blooming Lines – Digital concept

Year
07/05/2025

This mural series was inspired by the irises blooming in my mother’s garden every year in late May. Both of these flowers were created in Illustrator using the blend tool, allowing me to build intricate forms through rhythm and repetition. This method became a kind of meditation—letting the shapes grow organically, much like the flowers themselves.

Designed as statement wall pieces, these digital florals respond to the oversized botanicals trend in wallpaper and mural design. The background colors reflect projected Spring/Summer 2026 color trends—deep botanical greens, soft off-whites and charcoal tones—chosen to elevate the vibrancy of the florals while staying rooted in contemporary design palettes.
